Surrounded by over 3800 hectares of undisturbed BIG 5 Game Reserve and the famous Drakensburg Mountains, Tshukudu Marula Camp provides a relaxed home away from home. Welcome drinks are served in the open plan reception- and lounge area of the Main Lodge on arrival, and our free Wi-Fi service is available to all stay-over guests should you wish to connect with family and friends back home.

This Tshukudu Self-Catering camp has an indoor lounge and bar area fitted with limited DSTV as well as Free Wi-Fi in all the units and public areas, as well as a fully equipped COMMUNAL kitchen. Friendly staff will provide a fire in the traditional African Boma for your evening meal. Our younger guests are sure to enjoy the playground area with swings and a jungle gym. This self-catering camp is fully serviced and all linen and towels are provided. You only need to provide your own food, drinks and towels used for swimming. Experience the sounds of the bushveld and observe wildlife at the drinking trough from the pool or the veranda of the African style safari tents or cottages.

African Dining

For those guests who would like to take a break from self-catering or just want the opportunity to dine in style, buffet style breakfasts and dinners as well as light lunches can be pre-booked with Main Lodge Reception at an additional charge and are served on the thatched veranda or in the traditional African Boma of the Main Lodge.

The Rooms

Accommodation in the Tshukudu Self-Catering camp consists of 2 luxury, African style safari tents with bathrooms en-suite, 4 thatched cottages and 1 detached Family Unit. All our units are equipped with air-conditioning and Wi-Fi in the bedrooms.  This is a family safari camp so guests of all ages are welcome.

Each en-suite unit is equipped with a shower, minibar, coffee and tea-making facilities as well as a safe. Hairdryers can be obtained from the Main Lodge Reception desk.

Swimming Pool

Recliners under a canopy of thatch beckon guests to enjoy shady relaxation around the pool, which is also a prime vantage point for game viewing. A drinking trough lies just beyond the perimeter of the self-catering camp and attracts various antelope species, elephant and buffalo.

Curio Shop

In the curio shop situated at the Main Lodge you will find original treasures that have been gathered from all corners of the African continent as well as functional items such as hats, caps, beanies and T-shirts as well as postcards, toiletries, international plugs and various small trinkets that will remind you of your African Safari.

General Information:

  • Keep clothing colours as neutral and as light as possible, so you blend in better with the surrounding environment. Khaki, beige, brown and green are generally best, as darker and brighter colours attract unwanted mosquitoes and insects.
  • During certain times of the year malaria may be more prevalent in certain areas and we therefore suggest a mosquito repellent like Peaceful Sleep or something similar. Alternatively contact your local GP regarding the necessity of malaria prophylaxis.
  • A pair of comfortable walking shoes for bush walks or when off the game drive vehicle.
  • Meals are informal, so smart attire is not required.
  • Please pack a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, flashlight and binoculars.
  • Electricity at Tshukudu is a 220-volt alternating current system. Wall plug units take a round two-prong European plug. It is advisable to bring the necessary converter or adapter from your home country, should you need to charge cameras or laptops. Alternatively, international adaptors are available for purchase at the Curio Shop.
  • There is a Wi-Fi hotspot in the general public area of the lounge and around the pool area, as well as on the Main Lodge veranda and in all units.
  • Cellular phones work in most areas of South Africa and also in certain areas within the reserve, although it is not permitted to take cellular phones on game drive vehicles as they are considered an intrusion.
  • All our units are supplied with a limited amount of amenities such as soap, shower gel and shampoo. As this is a self-catering camp it is however advisable that you also provide your own favourites.
  • The Main lodge offers a laundry service at a nominal additional rate.
  • A Curio Shop is also situated at the Main Lodge and is reasonably priced.
